On the Road to WrestleMania 28 Miami with Jerry Lawler (Article From The Miami Herald)

No lions, tigers or bears, but there are cobras, silverbacks and pythons, making Jerry Lawler The King of WWE’s jungle.

Lawler, the longtime color commentator of WWE Raw, has worn many crowns during his pro wrestling/sports entertainment career that spans five decades. From referee to promoter to wrestler to Andy Kaufman, he’s just about done it all and done it all well.

“Honestly, I’m not trying to blow my own horn, because I feel lucky moreso than anything,” Lawler said, “but [WWE CEO/Chairman] Vince McMahon once told me, ‘I think you’re the most all-around talented guy I’d ever met in this industry.’ Then he explained, ‘You’ve done everything and done everything well. You’ve owned a wrestling company. You started out as a referee. You’ve wrestled. You’ve booked. You’ve done payrolls. You’ve done commentary. You still wrestle.’

“It’s just one of those things. It’s like that baseball movie ‘The Natural.’ Wrestling and anything involved with it has always come natural to me. I never took things too seriously, and I always had a great time and fun doing it.”

Dubbed The King, a well deserved title, Lawler, 62, is still having fun, whether he’s discussing the past times or the present with WWE and WrestleMania.

• Why did WrestleMania continue to make it where events like the AWA SuperClash and the NWA Great American Bash ended?

Lawler: “Well, yea, the reason, and he would not like me to blow his horn, but the reason WrestleMania made it, and the others didn’t simply was because of Vince McMahon. There’s nobody that’s more dedicated, and nobody who loves the WWE more than Vince McMahon. WrestleMania is the ultimate thing to him, and every year it’s grown bigger and bigger. I swear. I’ve been probably involved in 17 or 18 WrestleManias, and every single year, when WrestleMania is over, I honestly say to myself, ‘Well, no way they’ll ever top this,’ and somehow every single year they do.

“Last year [WrestleMania 27 in Atlanta] was the first one I got to compete on, and they were saying it was the greatest one in history. You had Stone Cold Steve Austin involved. You had The Rock back, involved with John Cena. You had Triple H and The Undertaker. At the end of that one, I said, ‘I don’t know how they’re going to top this,’ but somehow it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and better and better.

“There’s no question — when you look at the bottom line — the driving force that makes WrestleMania what it is … is Vince McMahon.”

• WrestleMania 28 in Miami means what to The King?

Lawler: “Oh my gosh. When you’ve been with the company as long as I have, you know WrestleMania is going to be great. You know it’s going to be big no matter where it is. So then you’re looking for the extra icing on the cake is the location. Good grief. Miami, what more could you ask for. There aren’t many cities that you’re going to be able to do. WWE superstars, we’re there for the entire week. It’s WrestleMania Week for us. There are a lot of appearances, and there are a lot of promotions and fan access, but then we also have some free time connected in the evening.
“So when you look for a place to enjoy yourself, what better place is there than Miami? So everybody’s excited that it’s going to be there — so much excitement, so many fun things to do there in the city, and the weather should be great. Like I said, the location is always the icing on the cake for WrestleMania, and being in Miami may be the best ever.”

• Favorite WrestleMania moments for The King?

Lawler: “Without a doubt, walking out in front of 71,000 fans and hearing 71,000 people chant your name and knowing for that one brief moment, you’re the center of attention [last year at WrestleMania 27 in Atlanta]. When you’re coming down that aisle, your entrance going to the ring at WrestleMania, theirs is absolutely no way to describe that. It sent chills up and down my back, tears in my eyes, hair on the back of my neck standing up, everything you could think of. I’m still amazed that my legs just didn’t go weak, and I didn’t pass out or stumble down that aisle. That’s how awesome that moment is, and then to go in the ring and have Stone Cold Steve Austin the special guest referee for my match, you can’t ask for anything more.

“My favorite moments for actually calling the action, there have been so many. One match that I really enjoyed calling was The Rock against Hulk Hogan [WrestleMania 18 in 2002 in Toronto]. That was a match you thought you’d never see. I’d put that like a match between Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson. It was just something you thought would never happen, and it was a great match. As far as I’m concerned, of the matches I’ve seen, it was probably Hulk Hogan’s best match ever, and The Rock was fabulous in it. So I thought that match was great.

“Also, I enjoyed the confrontations between my buddy Pete Rose [Major League Baseball’s Hit King] and Kane. How do you top seeing Pete Rose getting pile driven on the top of his head? What in the world. It’s classic. That was great.

“My other favorite was sitting next to Donald Trump and having him as a broadcast partner for some of the shows, leading up to the [hair vs. hair] match, and watching Donald Trump [via Bobby Lashley] be victorious [over Umaga] and seeing Vince McMahon get his head shaved.

“The WrestleMania DVD, ‘The History of WrestleMania,’ when you get that and look back, there are so many things that have happened at WrestleMania. It boggles the mind that you couldn’t remember them all. Then when you’re looking at them one-by-one, you say, ‘This is my favorite. No, no, this is my favorite. Oh no, this is better than that. So it’s hard to pick the best moment of WrestleMania.”

• WWE WrestleMania 28 is April 1 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens.

WWE LEGEND KAMALA - may lose other foot also

Article courtesy of TMZ.com.

WWE LEGEND KAMALA
Docs May Amputate OTHER Foot, Too

WWE legend Kamala is at risk of losing another foot due to his diabetes-related medical problems -- this according to his son.

As TMZ previously reported ... Kamala's left leg was amputated last year due to ongoing complications with diabetes and high blood pressure. Unfortunately the problems aren't over.

Kamala Jr. went on "The Roman Show" today and revealed, "[My father] is having complications with his other foot now ... Friday we'll know if they have to take his other foot off."

In the meantime, the wrestler's son says Kamala is still checking his Facebook page ... and really appreciates words of encouragement from his fans.

Kurt Angle -- I'm Hunting for the SCAMMERS Who Stole $4k from My Mom

Article courtesy of TMZ.com.

Former Team USA wrestling gold medalist Kurt Angle is on a mission to avenge his 80-year-old mother ... who sent $4,000 to heartless phone scammers after they convinced her a family member was in danger.

Angle tells TMZ .. his mother recently received a call from someone in the Domincan Republic who claimed her grandson was in a local jail and needed $4,000 STAT ... or the consequences would be severe.

Angle's mom, who lives in Pittsburgh, wired the cash and thought everything would be fine ... until she got another call the next day ... demanding an additional $4,000.

Mama Angle couldn't afford the payment ... so she contacted Kurt ... who had a feeling the whole thing was a scam and reached out to the family member who was supposedly in danger.

Turns out, the family member was FINE and hadn't been to the D.R. in over a year ... so Kurt contacted local authorities to get to the bottom of the situation.

According to the FBI, Kurt's mom is just one of MANY victims being targeted by international scammers who prey on the elderly.

Kurt tells us he has a feeling the people who duped his mom have an accomplice working near her home in Pittsburgh ... because they knew about his family ... and managed to find his mother's unlisted phone number.

"I'm gonna find the son of a bitch who did this to my mom," Angle tells us ... adding, "I don't want this happening to anyone else!"

EPW Wrestlers Featured In Brickhouse TV Season 4 Preview ..ADULTS ONLY!!

Jake "The Snake" Roberts interview highlights

Jake "The Snake" Roberts joined Busted Open with Dave Lagreca and Doug Mortman. You can hear Busted Open from 2-4 ET on Sirius 94, XM 208, and Sportszone 860 on the internet. Here are some highlights:

On WrestleReunion 7 "Well, you can expect everything. You can expect the unexpected from me. It's just a great moment for the fans 'cause you'll be able to get up close and personal with the guy, and , to me, that's the best part about it…to give back a little bit what they've given me over the years; give them a moment."

Not being in WWE Hall of Fame: "There's been a lot of guys go in that belong there, and — I'll say it again — I think there are some who shouldn't be in there, but who the hell am I? Hell, I'm not in there, so what the hell. Maybe someday when they put some more guys in there, maybe I'll go in. I would love to go in, not so much for me but for my kids, man. It's part of my legacy. I put so much into wrestling; 37 years of it. Why I'm not there, I'm sure somebody's got a reason."

Working with Alice Cooper at WrestleMania III: "It was a real hoot, man! I remember going to do a photo shoot at some hotel in New York City with Alice Cooper getting ready for Wrestlemania. I remember going up to his room with all the camera guys and stuff. We knocked on the door and this guy lets us in. And of course it's not just a room; it's a damn big suite. Alice comes in and what he does is like — I don't know if you ever seen the commercial where the two people are running up the hill towards each other in slow motion?— coming closer. All of a sudden he's being the fan, and here I am It's my turn to be the fan, asshole! He's saying, 'Come here, man! Come in!' I'm like, 'No wait, man! I listened to you when I was in high school! 'School's Out for Summer', that was hot when I was 17.' To be there with him was just unbelievable, and of course doing a match out there with him was unbelievable too.

"They took us up on our scissor - lifts way up in the air where it came to the curtain. From ninety-four thousand people… it took your breath away. You felt like your hair was growing, man! And as we're getting closer to the ring, I feel his fingernails sliding down my damn side and arm and I'm What the hell is that?! And I look, and Cooper is sliding down. I'm like, 'What's wrong?' And he's like, 'Too much rush.' And I'm like, 'What the eff are you talkin' about?!' And he's like, 'I'm alone!' And if you think about it, I understand where he's coming from. In his world, he'd come out on the stage, he'd have his band around him, had all his stuff ready to go, and he knew where he was going. But in my world, he was having to stand there on his own two feet with no guitar, no microphone, and he was running the show.

"We get to the ring and the match starts, and of course The Honky Tonk Man—being the prick that he is—he's really screwin' with Alice. He's like: 'You little f-ggot b---h! I'm gonna make you my horny woman!' And Cooper is starting to fire up, and Honky Tonk (once he sees him getting mad) he just keeps going: 'C'mon you little queer! Why they call you Alice, you little b---h?!' And he just keeps riding Alice, y'know: 'Take that jacket off, boy, I'll whoop your ass too, soon as I get through with Jake!' And Cooper pulls that jacket off, man, and it's like, Oh my god! Biafra! His arms are about the size of my toe!"

WWE then and now: "It was different. I certainly see where this is going, which is bringing us into the mainstream, and that's a positive thing. Y'know, Vince McMahon and the WWF did a hell of a deal turning this into such a monster. His machine is unbeatable. I mean, don't kid yourself TNA, you'll always be third stream; there is no second stream. You'll be third at least because there is no way in hell you're gonna catch these people, and you might as well forget about it and quit telling the people you are."

Characters and gimmicks: "As far as characters… you have a good one and you take care of it, it should last forever. The big thing is you just shouldn't go out there and destroy your own credibility. If you got two guys out in the ring and you're clothes-lining each other five times, who's the tough guy? Maybe one or both of you are lying pricks. Less is more and do the right thing. Don't do things that are stupid; that's how you get longevity out of a character. And today there are no characters, I don't think. They've all been just stirred up in a bucket and everybody's just the same.

Undertaker: "I love the guy, number one. Number two, I was there when he first got in there in the WWE. Here's really quite a story: He comes to me, he says, 'Hey I hear you know where all the good strip joints are at.' And I'm like, 'In the world, yes. I know them all.' And he's like, 'Well, I'll travel with you!' And I said, 'Oh boy, why don't you go back to playin' basketball because you're not gonna be able to hang with me,' and I said, 'I'll kill ya.' And a few weeks later, I believe he was in pretty bad shape—something about alcohol poisoning. Yeah, it was a chemical world, and I was cheating, man. He didn't know it. I wasn't gonna tell him! He rolled with me for quite a while. We're great friends and I'd like to think that I helped him more. I think if you asked him he'd tell you the same, that he learned a lot from me.

"That's what I was all about anyway, man, not only helping my own character, but helping others with theirs. My idea of being a professional wrestler is to make the show better. In other words, everybody must be better. And if I can help this guy lift his thing up a little bit, I'm gonna go help the guy. That's something I'm proud of. Whether it be Undertaker or Steve Austin, right on down the line. I think if you asked Austin who helped him the most, he'd tell you it was me. Wherever I met Austin, he wasn't gonna be more than third or fourth match, and I told McMahon, 'Try him for third for next superstar, man.' And he said, 'I don't think so.' Well, gee, even Mr. McMahon can be wrong every now and then!"

If people are scared to take a chance on him: "I don't think it's the past. I think it's just me, period, because of what I believe in. Vince McMahon once told, 'Jake, perception of you with our TV people and stuff is that you're angry.' I'm like, 'I'm not angry!' 'You told this guy it was a 'stupid effin' idea'!' I'm like, 'Well, it was a stupid effin' idea!' So I stand my ground on what I believe. And—uh—sometimes that gets you in trouble. I wouldn't be good in a boardroom, man. I speak my piece; I won't follow any stupid thing that I think is stupid. I'll just say Screw that; that's bulls--t. That's gets me in trouble, man. I'm a team player because I want the product better, but… my nose doesn't fit well up anybody's butt."

If inmates are running TNA: "Oh yeah! I think I told Vince McMahon that one time. Back whenever it was [Scott] Hall, [Kevin] Nash/Diesel (The Kliq) stay in this, you're letting the Inmates run the Asylum. They were calling the shots as they wanted to! And that's wrong. That is just totally wrong. I would have never thought about doing that out of respect for what this business it and what it is supposed to be. That is just freakin' wrong!

"You got people in the wrong positions, you got people that shouldn't be in those positions. And Dixie Carter—for whatever she is—I think she's a mark! And for whatever Hogan is, Hogan's not a booker! Christ. I mean, thank god they got rid of the jerk, the one that destroyed the WCW. What was his name... RUSSO! He'll probably go in the goddamn Hall of Fame before I do."

Training wrestlers: "I would love that! I would love to kill them! I would love to touch them all over. Enter their orifices with my thumb when they do something wrong. It's stupid! I would love to be teaching these kids. My god, I would love that. Because I could either sit back on my ass and try to watch wrestling (which I get so frustrated with today that I turn it off), or I could say, Okay, look, man, get up there and try to do something about it. And the only thing I could do about it now is by teaching. My physical problems: my feet, my hands, my neck, no wonder! If you have that happen, well, thirty-seven years of getting your ass kicked will do that to you, Jake! I can't compete anymore, but I can teach these kids so much. That would be a real joy for me. It certainly would."

Sunny interview highlights

Source: The Miami Herald

WWE Hall of Famer Sunny spoke with Jim Varsallone of The Miami Herald this week. Here are some highlights:

WWE Hall of Fame: "Seriously, the Hall of Fame was the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me. It was the hardest thing that I'd ever done, because I could go out there for 10 minutes and be Sunny, but to go out there for 10 minutes and be Tammy is a whole different story. I was so, so nervous, but as soon as I got out there on stage, Sunny came back. I pulled the Sunny switch. The Sunny switch came on, and I was fine. Before I went out, I couldn't remember my speech, but when I went out, I remembered every word. It's weird. I can't be Tammy, but I can be Sunny. Everybody told me I had the best speech of the night. I was so nervous, but even a lot of the wrestlers' wives came up to me at the after-party and said I had the best speech of the night."

WrestleMania: "Every show, for whatever reason, is the same to me, but WrestleMania is something different. I quit college for this. I was pre-med. I was going to be a plastic surgeon, and one semester before I was going to get my bachelor's degree and go on to medical school, that's when Vince [McMahon] called [in late 1994]. So if I quit med school for this, I must like it. It gets in your blood, and once it gets in your blood, it never leaves."

Great Championship Wrestling presents "VENGEANCE", 04/05/12, in Phenix City, AL

Press Release: Ric Flair WILL be at WWE Hall of Fame Induction

The following press release was issued today.

TNA IMPACT WRESTLING Star Ric Flair® to Attend WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Flair Confirms He Will be Present in Miami When the Four Horsemen Receive Their Hall of Fame Honor

CHARLOTTE, NC – (March 27, 2012) International celebrity the Nature Boy® Ric Flair is set to become the only wrestler in history to be inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Hall of Fame twice. Flair's dominant 1980s wrestling group, the Four Horsemen, known to be the greatest in ring performers of all time, will be granted their seat in the Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Miami, FL on March 31st, the day before Wrestlemania XXVIII. Flair will be inducted along-side fellow members of the Four Horsemen: Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham, and J.J. Dillon.

The news of Flair's second induction was followed by a firestorm of controversy. Questions flew about whether Flair would attend the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony as he is currently under contract with Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling. Understanding what a huge honor this is for Flair, TNA is graciously supporting him in the decision to attend the Hall of Fame ceremony alongside his fellow inductees. "Being inducted once was one of the greatest accomplishments of my career, so I'm humbled and honored to be recognized again. I wouldn't miss the ceremony for the world," says Flair.

TNA President Dixie Carter says, "We are proud of Ric's many accomplishments and contributions he has made to the world of professional wrestling and beyond. We wish to congratulate him on yet another honor he truly deserves."

Flair, a 16-time World Heavyweight Champion, was inducted individually into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008. On becoming a two-time inductee his agent Melinda Morris Zanoni of Legacy Talent and Entertainment says, "We are all so proud to be watching Ric continue to make history. There will never be an athlete more deserving of wearing two Hall of Fame rings than Ric Flair."

For more information on Ric Flair go to www.ricflair.com, follow him on Facebook: Ric Flair, The Nature Boy, or on Twitter: @RicFlairNatrBoy. Flair is currently with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. TNA airs Thursday nights (9/8c) on Spike TV with monthly 3- hour Per-Per-View events.
